State OCTA wrap up

Anyone who has ever attended a state OCTA conference knows that by Monday night, you are very tired, so this will be brief, with more details to follow  but the weekend was wonderful. I saw 15 great excerpts, true some were better than others but all were very worthy of being there. I wish FCT had been able to showcase the Northwest regions alternate, OUT OF STERNO, it would have been something very different from the other selections. Outstanding cuttings in my mind were,  AVENUE Q, RENT, DOUBT, THE OLDEST PROFESSION and THE SECRET GARDEN. I attended a responder round table discussion on how to improve our job at future festivals, and a parliamentary procedure workshop that despite the early Monday morning time slot, was very informative. I regret not entering the OUT OF STERNO set in the set design competition, or some of the costumes. OCTA awards excellence in newsletter, website, various in house tech aspects and many others, let’s make a goal to bring home a bunch of awards to show the state what great theatre FCT is capable of doing, when we work together!

Whaaaaatt? a challenge?

I challenge you to a duel!,… well, not exactly but in an effort to keep the FCT membership, and the world, I guess, updated on the happenings at FCT, my fellow blogger, Jim from “Above the stage” and myself have agreed to blog more diligently from now on…I know, “you’ve said that before crazy bald guy!”, and I have, but it is very important to me.. and us, that we strive to keep bringing all the information that is to be shared to those who want to know. We love the theatre and the fun it fulfillment it brings to our lives. It truly can be a wonderful place to be, to act, to sing, to dance, and to create on so many levels, some that we haven’t even begun to explore yet. With many new projects in the works and the understanding that so many new and old members aren’t sure how some things at FCT work, I will try to focus on some of that in the future, for starters!

Beginnings and Endings

Over the last 3 months, each time I stop out at FCT I find myself thinking…

it’s good to be back.

After spending parts of of six years working on nearly a dozen shows and numerous other projects, two years off from theatre made me realize how a part of my life it had become. When I was invited last November to work on Out of Sterno with Mindie and Mitch, I jumped at the chance to get back on board. It’s been a very busy and rewarding three months since then, and I’ve been grateful to rejoin the great group of theatre talent we have.

It’s been amazing to see all of the exciting new things that have happened in the meantime.  The theatre has brought back Youth Theatre, something that had been greatly missed for some time.  FCT put on its very own Play-in-a-Day, a fresh spin on improv theatre.  Leaving Iowa piled up an impressive 5 awards at last summer’s state-wide OCTA fest.  The green room and light booth have been re-vamped, and the theatre joined the social media revolution on Facebook.

Additionally, as you have no doubt noticed, the FCT website has a brand new look and feel. After nearly 5 years of the old site, it was finally time to move on.  The previous website was made in the era before Facebook and Twitter were household names and simply wasn’t up to the task of keeping up with news and updates that can change by the hour. We’ve adopted a website system based on the WordPress platform, which has worked beautifully thus far.  After the first month or so, we’re still fine-tuning some of the aspects of bringing you not just the latest theatre news, but also photos, videos, and articles from around the area.

A pretty exciting bunch of accomplishments, and there are more to come.  I hope that this blog–along with the Crazy Bald Guy’s venerable one–and our official web and Facebook pages will help to keep you up to date on some of the latest happening on, around, and above the FCT stage.
